Farmers Market @ Pearl

Went to the farmers market at Pearl this weekend as it was the big San Antonio Herb Society weekend with the family and was very excited as it was the first of the farmers market I have been to Inside410.  They are gaining in popularity every week and I am looking forward to visiting more...

Yuppers, it is fall here is San Antonio and it was a beautiful weekend at the event.  Crowds great and the lay-out was good.  As I walked around, I noticed that there were many more packaged foods than I was expecting and much less freshness thank I thought there would be.  Prepared as in different teas, breads and cakes and other odds-n-ends.  I did happen upon one table that had what I think is the best looking collection of turnips and radishes I had seen in a while.

It was a very big day for the herb lovers out there as that was the focus for the event so let's take a minute to learn a bit more about who they are:  The San Antonio Herb Society was formed in 1983 with the goals of sharing knowledge in planting, growing, harvesting and using herbs for cooking, scenting, decorating, and healing.  Currently, the SAHS has over 130 members.  The society participating in many area gardening events throughout the year, including the Herb Market this go-round.

There were simply loads of herbs, flowers and, what I wasn't expecting, succelents.

If you have the opportunity to visit this or any of the other farmers markets in the area, you are encouraged to do so.  Next time, I plan on visiting with more of the vendors to give you a bit more history of the products and insights into practices.  Looking forward to more freshness!

Historical Monte Vista

This history of Monte Vista and the current condition of this neighborhood is composed of legend, a dash of lore and has converged to what we have today...A wonderful area consisting of approximately 3,000 individuals all working together as best as can be expected to maintain the jewel of San Antonio...

Map of Monte Vista

Most of the properties in the neighborhood we constructed during what is called San Antonio's "Gilded Age" which ranged from 1890 to 1930.  This is recognized as the most extensive and intact neighborhood of this era in Texas...The neighborhood received national landmark status on December 10, 1988 and has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places...

Monte Vista by Donald E. Everett

One reason for the district's ability to survive the urban decay that destroyed such neighborhoods elsewhere is suggested in the exhaustive National Register nomination form, prepared by Maria Watson Pfeiffer:

The neighborhood's resilience was at least partially attributable to the wide variety of housing stock - eclectic in its range of sizes, materials and designs (and therefore prices) found in the area's numerous subdivisions, each built for a different segment of the homebuying public. Wealthy ranchers lived in close proximity to modest schoolteachers, each in houses designed and constructed by noted architects and builders.

The resulting array of architectural styles summarizes a booming period in San Antonio's history when popular national design trends influenced local tastes.

The strength of the neighorhood comes not only from those who call it home but also from the variety of styles of housing to include an attractive mix of Queen Anne, Hollywood bungalow, Georgian, Moorish and Victorian era architecture that gives Monte Vista its unique feel.

Yummy Yogurt In San Antonio…

Greetings…First blog about the cool urban lifestyle San Antonio has to offer…For no reason, we will start with what is some tasty treat that is available at Red Mango at the Quarry Village…Hanging at the Red Mango won’t make you popular with the locals but it will put a smile on your face and be a bit more healthy than some other things that you could be doing…
Quick visit with Judah a while back (red spoons for eyes is always fun) and we were hooked…

Freshness is what comes to mind…The fruit, the yogurt and the atmosphere are all equally refreshing and will remind each of us that there is still some level of goodness left in the world that can taste good at the same time…Come to find out, yogurt is one of the five healtiest foods in the world according to Health.com but what do they know, it taste good, that is all I need to know...

The photography was done by me and this blog is going to be dedicated to making sure that the world at large is aware of the fact that urban San Antonio has much more to offer than a good bean and cheese taco and some beer...
